What Happens Next?

An unfinished short story for you to guess the ending:

The little girls were crouched in their room, whispering excitedly about something. The crystal blue Frozen clock on the twin’s dresser displayed that it was 8:30 at night, and it was no exaggeration to say that Sarah and Allie were giddy. Partly because of the lateness of the hour, and partly because of what they were planning in their devilish six-year-old minds.
“And you're not just gonna pretend to come like last time?” Sarah questioned, furrowing her brow, and pursing her pink, thin mouth. They had been trying to plan their outing all month, since the crickets had begun to chirp.
“I told you, it was too cold last night,” Allie protested. “Besides, it's Friday, and I think Mom and Dad stay up late on Friday anyway.”
The two fell silent for a couple breaths, taking in the magnitude of what they were about to do.
“Allie?” Sarah asked timidly, “Are you sure about this? I mean, ” the girl hurried on, “Mom and Dad won’t be mad?”
Allie sat up, considering the possibility. “I don’t think so,” she decided, “Olivia says she does this all the time, so it can’t be that bad. They'll probably let us.”
“Oh, right!” Sarah perked up, “Olivia is pretty smart.”
“She reads Nancy Drew.” Allie announced proudly, as though the great intellectual feat was her own.
“That really big book she carries around?”
“Uh huh,” Allie replied, the awe in her voice was far from subtle. They sat, thinking about Olivia’s cleverness before saying another word.
“Well?” Sarah stood, breaking the silence and slinking toward the door.
Allie rose, following her sister’s lead. The two stood, their matching Disney princess nightgowns swirling around their ankles, then, without a breath, Allie pushed open the door and stepped into the uncharted territory of the past-bedtime hallway.

What happens next? What are these two devilishly clever six-year-olds plotting? Will they be allowed to? Guess in the comments, and I'll post the ending next week.....

  1. If these two are anything like my two were, they are scheming a post-bedtime bowl of cereal. Then they might sneak into the living room and watch cooking shows.

    1. Oh my goodness, that is exactly what I would do, too! These little girls, however, are doing something that can only be done in the summertime when it's dark outside....
