Home Is a Complicated Word

Home. Just your simple everyday word. Easy. But is it really that straightforward? I have a question for you, don't worry, it should be easy.

In one sentence, describe the word home.

Okay, are you back yet? Was it as easy as you thought? Probably not. The thing is, home has many meanings, many interpretations. Each person has his or her own take on it and some definitions are more complex than others. The official definition of home is: the place (such as a house or apartment) where a person lives. That definition is correct of course -it's official but is it thorough?  That definition describes the physical elements of a house, but a home is more than four walls, a roof and perhaps a bed. Home is comprised of feelings, memories, and comfort. To some, home is just the place where they sleep. To some, a house that's been in the family for years.

As for that question I asked, there is no one right or wrong answer. It wasn't rhetorical, as it's actually quite thought-provoking, but you all pass. Time for a mini celebration!

I hope you had a good mini I-passed-the-stupid-question-about-home celebration! To finish off the  post, I have come up with a short poem about home. (If you don't read it, that's okay, you won't hurt my feelings, but before you close out of this window, the poem involves hobbits. Briefly, but still, some hobbit is better than none. )

The Places Called Home

To some it's a hobbit hole,
to others it's a cave,
to some a gleaming palace
overlooking sea and wave.

A roof and walls aren't all you need,
for the home is in the heart.
A home is built up carefully,
part by loving part.

For in a home dwell mind and soul,
laughter, love, and faith.
Upon a foundation of rock and stone,
surrounded by a gate.

Inside one keeps one's memories,
one's children and one's wife,
inside my home, I write my own,
the story of my life.

Did you catch the hobbit part? Its the very first line. (You could also consider the second line to be a reference to Gollum. )

So, go enjoy your home - whatever that  means to you, drink some hot cocoa, and bake something yummy!
